The Islander Home

Magnetic Island is a popular tourist destination located off the coast of Townsville. It is known for its pristine beaches, wildlife and tropical climate. Due to its location, the island is susceptible to extreme weather conditions including cyclones, heavy rain and high temperatures.

The homeowner wanted an open-air patio that overlooked the bay to ensure they maintained the spectacular view of the magnificent Magnetic Island sunsets. They also wanted to create a usable outdoor space that provided a cool and shady area but also aesthetically pleasing.

One of the challenges the homeowner faced on Magnetic Island was the remote location, getting access to the site was difficult journey over the sea and through dirt roads. The patio was to be extended on an existing home built amongst the rocks and boulders of Magnetic Island.

To address these challenges, a flyover patio design using Nordeck® insulated roof panel was the perfect solution. The flyover design only required support by 2 beams and only 4 posts and the insulated roof panel spanned 6m x 6m dimensions. When using Nordeck® in a fly over design it allows increased airflow, enhanced natural lighting and protection form the elements.

Using Nordeck® insulated panel is a light weight panel that allows for easier transportation from the local factory in Townsville to the bay on Magnetic Island. The two COLORBOND® steel facings maintain the durability and strength to withstand the harshest environment conditions, also approved to be used Cyclonic regions, Nordeck® was the best choice to complete this project.

Overall, Nordeck® provides significant benefits to the homeowner. Firstly, offering an additional living space outdoors that does not limit their views of the bays, it provides a comfortable thermally efficient roof and is structural sound to withstand the cyclonic conditions.

The home owner will enjoy this space, making it a worthwhile investment.
